After the Storm - Tips for Dealing with the Damages
- Call your insurance agent as soon as possible with specific information about property losses.
- Take photos of damaged property as soon as possible.
- Secure a repair estimate (preferably at least two) for the adjuster to review. This will help the adjuster with the settlement process.
- To prevent further damage, have emergency repairs made (e.g. board up broken windows, cover leaking roof with tarps, dry out carpets and personal property etc.). Keep all receipts for emergency repairs, materials or services. If you do not do this and further damage results, it may not be covered.
- On permanent repairs, do not sign agreements or contracts with contractors until the insurance company adjuster inspects the damage and approves reimbursement. Don’t order permanent repairs until the adjuster gives approval, or dispose of any damaged property before an adjuster has been able to see the damage. In the case of perishable items (i.e. food, that must be disposed of, first take photographs of that property to substantiate the claim. If you do not, some damages may not be covered).
- Prepare a detailed list of all damages (description, age, original cost, place of purchase, estimated replacement cost), including sales receipts or other proofs of purchase for damaged property. Any receipts or cancelled checks for these items should also be included. Have it ready for the adjuster.
- If you have to leave a home or business for an extended time without power and heat, you can prevent pipes from freezing and bursting by leaving a trickle of water running or draining the pipes. To drain the system, shut off the main water valve and open all faucets, showers, etc. Also drain the hot water tank.
- Prevent electrical damage by shutting off all circuit breakers and unplugging all appliances including televisions, microwave ovens and computers.
