These are suggestions to reduce or eliminate water damage from frozen pipes:
- Shut-off source of incoming water i.e. meters, well-pumps
- Open all sink faucets
- Drain hot water heaters and boilers
- In hydronic heat systems bleed registers and open line vents
- During repairs it may be more cost effective to install new piping rather than destroy floors, walls, and ceilings to gain access to old lines.
- Toilets and other fixtures may be saved by pouring non-toxic propylene glycol antifreeze down drains and traps. (NOTE: Do not use car antifreeze.)
